Aprons 2
with Colleen K
Join me in a single evening session for quick gift-making!
This cute apron goes together in a flash. I'll provide a pattern for you, along with instruction and suggestions for customizing. (Hint: Angled pockets are fabulous.) Samples are made from two layers of quilting cotton, but you can use a single layer of duck cloth, canvas, denim, or other sturdy fabric. Cotton is highly recommended as it cleans up nicely - polyester will hang onto those oil splatters for dear life.
You bring your own materials (pre-shrunk please):
- 1 yard for outer layer
- 1 yard for lining, optional but recommended if you are using lightweight fabrics
- 3 yards 1" cotton webbing, single package of extra-wide double-fold bias tape, or 1" grosgrain ribbon. DO NOT USE SATIN RIBBON!!
- Thread for sewing
Optional upgrades - samples do not have but would be great ways to personalize:
- Trim like rick-rack, fringe, lace, or applique
- A side-clasp buckle or pair of D-rings for the webbing, if yours is too stiff to tie
Also bring your sewing machine/pedal and favorite tools like shears and ships. I have extras on hand of most tools.
Mini-duffel Bag 2
with Colleen K
Ages: 13 - 18
This cute little bag can be used to store lots of useful items: sewing tools, cosmetics, even to hold cookies as a gift! We have a lot of skills in this bag: Using a fusible stabilizer, adding a zipper, and matching seams. This is a fun project to make from a decorator fabric or a quilting cotton.
You can make this bag from a single fat quarter, or make several out of a yard of fabric. A backing fabric would give you a nice lining; if you want this pick up another fat quarter (stick with cottons though, don't use slippery lining). You could also choose to use multiple fabrics to create a unique look, so 1/4 yard of each would do.
You'll also need a zipper and thread to match. I have both fusible fleece and fusible foam for you to play with (included in the class cost).
Bring to class:
- Sewing machine/pedal, favorite tools like pins and scissors
- Pre-washed fabric(s), thread, zipper
Meets once, and you should have a mostly finished bag at the end of class. Class is open to teens ages 13+

Super cute holiday stockings 2
with Colleen K
Making holiday stockings is easy and fun! And we'll finish at least one in this three-hour, one-night class.
I'll have samples of stockings that I've made from silk, fun prints, and simple fabrics with fun applied designs. And I'll have a handful of trims on hand, but you might want your own. You can use beads, rick-rack, ribbons, lace, or whatever strikes your fancy.
In this class, we'll talk about using good quality faux fur. I'll provide white fur for your cuff; you provide the rest of the materials (1/2 yard of outer fabric and 1/2 yard of lining is usually sufficient, thread to match, and any trim you like).
Class is suitable for ages 13+, although you should already have basic sewing skills. Bring your sewing machine/pedal and favorite tools to the first class.

Fitting and Changing a Commercial Pattern
with Colleen K
Registration for this class has been moved to Eventbrite. Please go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/fitting-and-changing-a-commercial-pattern-tickets-1087062987659?aff=oddtdtcreator
This is an advanced class. Participants should be able to follow a pattern to completion.
This class will explore the partnership between paper pattern shape and fit on the body.
We will start with a commercial pattern of your choice, take careful measurements, make preliminary adjustments, build a test garment, evaluate fit, and then adjust the paper pattern. A second test garment is often required, depending on the complexity of the garment.
Building on the knowledge of shape and fit, we will then move into more artistic decisions. Want a different sleeve? Great! Prefer more flare in the skirt? No problem, we can do that now.
Expect to do some work sewing up test garments in between classes. Participants will be prepared to take more abstract pattern drafting classes after this session.
Bring to first class:
- Paper pattern - simpler is better for a first time. Blouses, skirts, dresses are ok; jackets are not recommended. Trousers are a "maybe" - consult instructor ahead of time if unsure
- Tape measure
- Wearer of garment, if possible. If not, contact instructor ahead of time for key measurements to take before class
- Fabric for test garment
- Shears, pins, etc for cutting
Instructor email is colleen@stitchmasters.org
Class meets four times, Saturday afternoons.
